My 2 1/2 yr. old is the same way. I'm hoping she outgrows it. Even my super-outgoing 9 year old went through this when she was around 2-3.

My eldest was almost ridiculously sociable, reaching out to complete strangers on the subway, smiling and cooing at scary old guys and sweet little grannies alike. I had to stop her from walking off with total strangers, she was so friendly. When my youngest came along, I could hardly believe how anti-social and shy she was, shrinking away from everyone and doing turtle impersonations (hmm, turtles aren't people, are they?) And yet I was shy as a child, so I find my youngest a lot easier to understand than my eldest.

Strangely, I think I'm one of those people who started out as a gregarious kid, and got more and more shy as I reached adulthood!
