Might I suggest an even more cynical view? The GOP found, when in power, that the people generally respond favorably (read: with votes) when you give them other people's money. What they didn't count on was the backlash against the personality of Bush.

Remember the Democrats in the last few years had taken on the mantle of fiscal responsibility? Why? Because it was "rank partisanship?" No--because it was the right thing to do.

So why are they suddenly the party of "Spend?" Because they once again realize that votes come to those who dole.

And remember, there is a strong distinction between being responsive to the "TAX payer" and being responsive to the VOTER. Most of the benefits and tax cuts have the effect of eliminating income tax, and significantly (but temporarily) reducing the social security, or payroll, tax.

So those in power pander to the voters. Those not in power to the taxpayers.

I'm frightened about the massive and increasing debt as well. And I'm worried that partisanship will continue to rip us apart as it has for the last 8+ years. I've been praying a lot for our country!
